The Emerald Dwarf Danio (Danio erythromicron), long traded as the emerald dwarf rasbora, is endemic to Inle Lake and its surrounding wetlands in Myanmar and reaches only about 2 to 2.5 cm. Males show orange flanks crossed by ten to fifteen vertical emerald bars; females are paler and rounder. Inle Lake is under significant environmental pressure, so captive-bred stock is the right choice. Keep a group of ten or more in a planted tank from 40 litres at 20-26C with a pH of 7.0 to 8.0 and medium to hard, alkaline water. This is the detail most keepers miss: Inle is a hard alkaline lake, so unlike most nano fish it should not be kept in soft acidic blackwater. Provide fine plants, sand and gentle flow. Feed crushed micro-pellets, fine flake, live and frozen baby brine, cyclops and daphnia. It is peaceful and shrimp safe, and males display to each other constantly without real aggression when kept in proper numbers.
