Native to the arid scrublands of Chile, Argentina, and Bolivia, the Chilean rose is a hardy terrestrial tarantula with a roughly 12-14 cm legspan. Females are remarkably long-lived, often reaching 15-20 years, while mature males rarely survive past five. Their slow metabolism lets them fast for weeks or even months, particularly before a molt, which alarms new keepers unnecessarily. House one adult alone in a 20-30 litre terrarium with 8-10 cm of dry-to-barely-moist substrate, a cork-bark hide, and a shallow water dish. Room temperature (20-26C) and low humidity suit them well. Feed a few appropriately sized crickets or roaches weekly, and never offer prey to a spider in premolt or showing a darkened, bald abdomen. Like all New World species they flick urticating hairs when stressed, so handle minimally and keep your hands well away from your eyes.
