The Devon Rex is a mischievous, intensely people-focused pixie of a cat that wants to be part of everything — riding on shoulders, tucking under the covers and following you room to room. Playful and clever well into adulthood, it is a poor fit for someone who wants an aloof, low-contact cat; a Devon needs interaction and warmth, and because it seeks heat it should be an indoor cat with cozy spots to curl into. The short, wavy 'rex' coat is delicate and sheds little, so skip harsh brushing — a gentle wipe or light stroke is enough, and over-bathing damages it. Instead, the real grooming tasks are cleaning the large ears, which build up wax, and wiping the skin's oils, especially in the nail folds. The breed carries a few specific conditions to buy carefully around: hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, patellar luxation, and Devon Rex hereditary myopathy (a muscle-weakness disorder with a DNA test), plus a tendency toward greasy-skin and coat fragility. Choose a breeder who screens for the heart and muscle conditions, keep the ears clean, and maintain routine dental and weight care.
