The Chartreux is France's smiling blue cat, a quiet, gentle and deeply loyal companion famous for being nearly silent — many rarely meow, communicating instead with soft chirps and an expressive gaze. Calm and observant, it tends to attach strongly to one person while remaining a peaceful, adaptable presence for the whole family, happy to follow its human quietly from room to room. It is playful in a measured way and generally undemanding. The dense, woolly, water-resistant blue double coat is its signature and needs the right care: comb or finger-groom it a couple of times a week (a fine brush can flatten the plush texture), stepping up during the heavy seasonal molt. This is a slow-maturing breed that fills out over several years. Generally hardy, the Chartreux is watched by good breeders for patellar luxation and, given its love of food, obesity — measured meals and play matter. Provide plenty of water and monitor for struvite urinary crystals the breed can be prone to, keep up dental care and routine heart and kidney checks as it ages.
