The Burmese is a compact, surprisingly heavy cat — 'a brick wrapped in silk' — with an outsized, deeply people-addicted personality. It stays playful and kitten-like into old age, wants to be involved in everything, and considers a warm lap mandatory seating. This intense need for company means a Burmese should not be left alone for long days; it thrives with an attentive owner or a feline companion. Affectionate and vocal in a soft, chirpy way, it enjoys interactive play, fetch and climbing. The short, glossy, satin coat is wonderfully easy, needing only an occasional wipe or weekly brush to shine. Health-wise there are a few breed-specific points to know: the Burmese is predisposed to diabetes and gains weight easily, so lean feeding and daily activity really matter; some lines carry Burmese hypokalaemic polymyopathy (an episodic muscle-weakness disorder with a DNA test) and, in certain lines, a serious craniofacial defect that ethical breeders avoid. Buy from a breeder who DNA-tests for hypokalaemia and screens for heart disease, keep the cat slim, and maintain regular dental and glucose-aware vet care.
