The Bombay is a miniature black panther — a sleek, patent-leather cat with glowing copper eyes, created by crossing Burmese with black American Shorthairs to look wild while being utterly domestic in heart. It is social, affectionate and people-oriented, seeking out warm laps, greeting guests, chatting in a soft voice and often learning to walk on a leash. It bonds closely and dislikes being left alone all day, so it does best with company or a feline friend. The short, glossy coat is famously easy — a weekly stroke with a rubber brush or a chamois keeps it mirror-shiny. Give the Bombay interactive play and a warm spot to bask, and it will reward you with devoted, entertaining company. From its Burmese ancestry the breed can inherit a somewhat shortened muzzle that occasionally brings tearing or breathing quirks, along with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and a tendency to gain weight; some lines also carry Burmese-related conditions. Buy from a breeder who screens hearts, keep the cat lean, and maintain good dental care and routine vet checks.
