The British Shorthair is a calm, independent and thoroughly undemanding cat that shows its affection by staying nearby rather than climbing into your lap. Easygoing and dignified, it copes well with being home alone during the workday and settles happily into quiet apartments and family houses alike. This is not a hyperactive breed, but it does love a good daily play session and will pile on weight without one, so keep interactive toys and food puzzles in rotation. It tends to dislike being carried or held tightly — respect its preference for four paws on the ground and it will reward you with steady, loyal company. The dense, plush double coat is easy for most of the year with a weekly brush, but sheds heavily in spring and autumn when daily grooming helps. Watch closely for obesity, screen for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), keep up dental care, and provide plenty of water to support kidney and urinary health as they age.
