The Emperor Tetra (Nematobrycon palmeri) comes from the San Juan and Atrato rivers in Colombia and reaches about 4 to 5 cm. Two features set it apart: the middle rays of the tail extend to form a third point between the usual two lobes, and the upper half of the eye glows blue-green in males. Females are smaller with a duller eye and a rounder body. A group of six or more needs 80 litres or more at 23-27C, pH 6.0 to 7.5 in soft to moderately hard water, with planting, wood and diffused light. Feed quality micro pellets and flake with frozen daphnia, cyclops and brine shrimp. It is peaceful with other species, though males set up small loose territories and display at each other with spread fins, so a group with several females spreads that energy out. It does not shoal tightly like a neon, tending instead to spread across the tank as individuals, which is normal for the species rather than a sign of stress.
