The Congo tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus) is an African characin endemic to the Congo River basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Larger than most tetras, males reach about 8.5 cm and females around 6 cm, and they live 3–5 years. Mature males develop shimmering rainbow scales and long, feathery fin extensions. Because of their size and activity, Congos need a tank of 150 litres or more with plenty of length. Keep them at 23–28°C in soft, slightly acidic water with a pH of 6.0–7.5, a dark substrate and dense planting with open swimming lanes. They are shoaling fish that must be kept in groups of six or more to feel secure and show their best colour. Congo tetras are omnivores that relish flake, pellets and frozen or live foods like bloodworm and brine shrimp. Peaceful but somewhat shy, they can be nervous with boisterous tankmates and may nip their own long fins if stressed. Sensitive to poor water, their main risks are ich and fin rot; stable, soft, well-filtered water and a calm environment keep them iridescent and healthy.
