The Bleeding Heart Tetra (Hyphessobrycon erythrostigma) comes from the upper Amazon in Peru and Colombia and reaches about 6 to 8 cm, making it one of the larger community tetras. The red blotch on the flank is present in both sexes, while males have a much longer, sickle-shaped dorsal fin and a longer anal fin. A group of six or more needs 150 litres or more at 23-28C, pH 6.0 to 7.5, ideally in soft, slightly acidic water with driftwood, tannins, planting and shaded light. Feed quality flake and pellets with frozen bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp. It is peaceful and does not nip, but it is a deep-bodied, somewhat nervous fish that needs a longer tank than its length suggests and dislikes bright open aquascapes. Newly imported specimens are prone to fungal and bacterial problems if the water is not clean and stable, so it is a species worth buying from a well-run shop and settling carefully rather than adding to a tank that is still finding its feet.
