The Black Phantom Tetra (Hyphessobrycon megalopterus) comes from the Guapore and Paraguay basins and reaches about 4 to 5 cm. Males are smoky grey with tall black-tinted fins; females are lighter with reddish pelvic and anal fins. The black shoulder blotch edged in iridescent blue is present in both sexes. A group of eight or more needs 80 litres or more at 22-28C, pH 6.0 to 7.5, with planting, wood and diffused light. Feed flake, micro pellets and frozen daphnia, cyclops and brine shrimp. Its most enjoyable trait is the male sparring display: two males face off side by side with every fin fully spread, holding the pose for a few seconds before separating, with no contact and no injury. It is peaceful with other species, does not nip, and suits a planted community with rasboras, corydoras and dwarf cichlids. Keep several males so the display behaviour actually happens, and keep the tank shaded so the smoky colouring shows properly.
