The frilled dragon ranges through the tropical woodlands of northern Australia and southern New Guinea, reaching 70-90 cm including its long tail and living 10-15 years. Its trademark frill, a collar of skin supported by cartilage rods, is snapped open to startle predators and rivals, and alarmed animals sprint bipedally to the nearest tree. It is a semi-arboreal, active basker. Adults need a tall, planted enclosure of at least 120x60x120 cm with sturdy vertical branches for climbing. Provide a hot basking spot of 35-40 C, strong UVB, and moderate humidity around 50-70% with a daily misting. Feed a varied insectivore-leaning omnivore diet of gut-loaded crickets, roaches, and worms, with occasional pinkies and some greens for adults. Regular calm handling from a young age helps, though they remain alert and quick.
