Sailfin dragons inhabit the humid riverine forests of Indonesia, the Philippines, and New Guinea, reaching up to 1 m in length and living 10-15 years or more. Mature males develop a striking vertical sail on the base of the tail used in display, and the species is a strong swimmer that flees into water when alarmed. Their size, nervousness, and habitat needs make them an advanced keeper's animal. Adults require a very large, tall, planted enclosure of at least 180x90x180 cm with robust climbing branches and a sizable water feature for swimming. Provide a basking zone of 32-38 C, powerful UVB, and high humidity of 70-90% via misting or fogging. Feed an omnivorous diet of large insects, occasional rodents, and a good proportion of leafy greens, fruit, and vegetables for adults. Patient, consistent interaction helps calm these easily startled lizards.
