The uromastyx is a hardy, spiky-tailed desert lizard with one striking requirement: heat, and lots of it. These sun-lovers need the hottest basking spot of any common pet reptile — a scorching 49–54°C directly under the lamp — alongside strong UVB, a large arid enclosure with a cooler end, and low humidity, which mimics the desert they evolved in. Get that blazing gradient right and they are calm, long-lived and undemanding. Uniquely among popular lizards, the uromastyx is essentially herbivorous: it thrives on a dry diet of leafy greens, dandelions, and small amounts of seeds and lentils, and does not need live insects at all. In fact too much animal protein is dangerous, contributing to gout and kidney disease. Because they come from arid regions, health problems cluster around the wrong conditions: respiratory infection if kept too humid, kidney disease and gout from excess protein or dehydration, metabolic bone disease without UVB and calcium, and impaction from loose substrate. Provide intense heat, UVB, a dry plant-based diet and clean water offered periodically, and a uromastyx will bask contentedly for fifteen to thirty years.
