The Greek tortoise inhabits a broad range around the Mediterranean basin, spanning North Africa, southern Europe, and the Middle East, where it lives in dry grasslands, scrub, and rocky hillsides. A small species at 13-25 cm, it is exceptionally long-lived, commonly reaching 50-100 years, with the celebrated potential to be passed down through generations. Provide a spacious tortoise table or outdoor pen with deep substrate for digging and a dry, ventilated layout mimicking its arid home. A basking spot of 32-35°C, a cooler retreat, and strong UVB are essential for healthy bone and shell development. Because subspecies vary in cold and humidity tolerance, research your specific type. Feed a high-fiber, low-protein diet of weeds, dandelion, clover, plantain, and leafy greens, avoiding excess fruit and protein, and always supply fresh water and regular soaks to maintain hydration.
