The leopard tortoise ranges across the savannas and grasslands of eastern and southern Africa, from Sudan and Ethiopia down to South Africa. It is a large species, typically reaching 30-45 cm and 10-40 kg, and is very long-lived at 50-100 years, so prospective keepers must plan for both its considerable size and multi-decade lifespan. Leopard tortoises need warm, dry conditions and a large enclosure, ideally an outdoor pen in a suitable climate with a heated shelter, since they are sensitive to cold and damp and prone to respiratory infection. Provide a basking area around 32-35°C and strong UVB, along with ample space to graze. As dedicated grazers, they require a very high-fiber, low-protein diet built on grasses and hay supplemented with weeds and leafy greens; avoid fruit and protein-rich foods to prevent shell pyramiding and digestive upset.
