The red-footed tortoise comes from the tropical forests, savannas, and forest edges of northern South America and the southern Caribbean, favoring warm, humid conditions unlike arid-climate tortoises. A medium species at 30-40 cm, it lives around 50-90 years and is celebrated for its outgoing, curious temperament that makes it a rewarding, engaging pet. Unlike desert tortoises, red-foots require higher humidity, so provide a large enclosure with moisture-retaining substrate, humid hides, and a shallow water area for soaking. Maintain a basking spot of 30-33°C, a warm humid gradient, and UVB lighting for calcium metabolism. Their tropical origin means they must stay warm and never dry out. Uniquely among tortoises, they are omnivorous: feed a base of leafy greens, weeds, and flowers plus a good share of fruit, with occasional animal protein such as worms or low-fat meat to reflect their natural diet.
