The Russian tortoise is small but tough, active and wonderfully characterful — and it can live forty to fifty years or more, so it is a multi-decade commitment that may outlast other plans. Despite the small size it needs a large floor area, not a tall tank: an open tortoise table or an outdoor pen suits its urge to roam, dig and climb far better, along with strong UVB, a basking spot for warmth, and a hide. Diet is the make-or-break: a high-fibre, low-protein mix of weeds, dandelions, and leafy greens — never fruit, dog food or protein as a staple, and not iceberg lettuce, which is nutritionally empty. The wrong diet and humidity cause 'pyramiding', where the shell grows in raised lumps, along with bladder stones and beak overgrowth. These are burrowers and hibernators that dig to escape and to sleep out the cold season. Watch for metabolic bone disease, respiratory infection (a runny nose is a warning sign), and shell or beak problems, and provide UVB, a proper weed-based diet, space and clean water. Get those right and a Russian tortoise can genuinely outlive its keeper.
