Sulcata tortoises are enormous, powerful grazers that are wholly unsuited to indoor life long-term; adults need secure outdoor grazing space with sturdy fencing they cannot bulldoze, and a heated, insulated shed for cool weather kept above 15–18°C. Provide a basking spot around 35°C, dry conditions, and a shallow water area for soaking. They dig deep burrows, so fences must extend underground. The diet is high-fibre and grass-based: grass hay, edible weeds, and dark leafy greens form the bulk, with almost no fruit and never protein-rich or wet foods, which cause fatal shell and kidney problems in this arid-adapted grazer. Constant access to grass and hay keeps the gut and shell healthy. Handling is limited by sheer size, but sulcatas are curious and interact readily; young ones can be lifted carefully while adults are led rather than carried. The great husbandry sins are too much protein and humidity, which cause bumpy 'pyramided' shells, plus metabolic bone disease without UVB or calcium, respiratory infection when kept cold and damp, and obesity. Anyone taking one on is signing up for decades and hundreds of kilos of commitment.
