The Hermann's tortoise is a hardy, good-natured Mediterranean grazer, and with a lifespan of fifty to eighty years it is a genuinely multi-generational pet — one that may pass to your children or grandchildren. It thrives with outdoor access to graze in warm weather, or a large open tortoise table with strong UVB, a basking lamp and a hide; it needs room to walk, and to dig a burrow to rest and to hibernate in the cool season. Diet defines its health: a high-fibre, high-calcium, low-protein diet of wild weeds, flowers and leafy greens, with calcium supplementation and no fruit or animal protein as a staple. The classic mistakes — too much protein, too little fibre or calcium, and the wrong humidity — cause shell pyramiding, bladder stones and overgrown beak and nails. Provide UVB and a basking gradient so it can process calcium, keep the diet weed-based, and watch for metabolic bone disease and respiratory infection (signalled by a runny nose or wheezing). Hibernation should be managed carefully and only with a healthy, well-weighted tortoise. Get the light, heat and diet right, and a Hermann's tortoise will sunbathe legs-out in your garden for generations.
