The green tree python inhabits the rainforests of New Guinea, Cape York in Australia, and nearby islands, spending almost its entire life in the canopy. Adults reach about 1.5 to 1.8 meters and 1 to 2 kilograms, living 15 to 20 years. Juveniles hatch bright yellow or brick red and undergo a spectacular color change to green, a transformation that captivates keepers. House this arboreal specialist in a tall, secure enclosure with numerous horizontal perches at varying heights. It demands high humidity of 60-80% with good airflow, a daytime ambient near 28-30C, a basking perch around 31C, and a cooler night drop. Feed frozen-thawed rodents every one to two weeks using long tongs. Green tree pythons resent frequent handling and can deliver a sharp bite; they are best appreciated as a beautiful, hands-off display species.
