The Huacaya is the most numerous of the two alpaca types, domesticated thousands of years ago in the high Andes of Peru, Bolivia, and Chile. Standing around 90 cm at the shoulder and weighing 55-84 kg, these fiber animals live 15-20 years and grow the dense, springy, crimped fleece that gives them their characteristic fluffy look. Alpacas are strongly herd-bound and must be kept in groups of at least three; a lone alpaca will suffer. They need well-drained pasture, a three-sided shelter for shade and rain protection, and secure fencing to deter predators. Feed grass, hay, and a camelid-specific mineral supplement, avoiding overfeeding. They require annual shearing, regular toenail trimming, dental checks for their continuously erupting teeth, and routine deworming. Their gentle, quiet nature makes Huacayas rewarding for small-acreage fiber enthusiasts.
