Kribensis (Pelvicachromis pulcher) is a dwarf cichlid from the fresh and brackish waters of the Niger Delta in West Africa, in Nigeria and Cameroon. It reaches about 8–10 cm and lives around 5 years. Its most famous feature is the female's brilliant cherry-red belly, which intensifies when she is ready to breed. Kribs suit a tank of 75 litres or more at 24–28°C with a pH of 6.0–7.5, though they tolerate a wide range. They are cave-spawners, so provide caves, driftwood, plants and a fine substrate they can dig. A bonded pair claims a small territory and becomes protective only around a nest, staying peaceful otherwise. They are omnivores that eat pellets, flake, and frozen or live foods, and will sift the substrate. Devoted parents, both male and female guard and herd their fry with remarkable diligence. Generally hardy, their main risks are ich and fin rot from poor water; a stable, well-filtered tank with hiding places keeps these charming cichlids content.
