The kribensis, or krib, is a hardy and adaptable West African dwarf cichlid famed for being one of the easiest cichlids to breed, making it a favorite for aquarists ready to observe cichlid parenting firsthand. Uniquely, the female is often the more colorful sex, flushing an intense cherry-red belly when in breeding condition. They tolerate a wide range of water conditions around 75-82F and adapt to most community setups. Provide caves, coconut shells, or overturned pots, since kribs are cave-spawners that form devoted monogamous pairs and become boldly territorial while guarding eggs and shepherding fry. Outside of breeding they are generally peaceful with mid- and upper-level tankmates. They accept a varied diet of pellets, flake, and frozen foods, and will sift the substrate for morsels. A breeding pair diligently herding their swarm of fry through the tank is a captivating display of cooperative parental care.
