The Lionhead is a relatively modern breed, arising from a genetic mane mutation and standardized in Europe before spreading worldwide. It weighs about 0.7-1.7 kg, lives seven to ten years, and is named for the ruff of long wool encircling its head. Lionheads are generally friendly and playful, making engaging companions for owners prepared for their grooming needs. Rabbits are social animals best kept in neutered bonded pairs with a large exercise space and daily free-roam time. The Lionhead's defining feature, its wool mane, requires frequent brushing, often several times a week, to prevent painful matting and to reduce ingested hair, which can cause dangerous gut stasis. Feed unlimited grass hay supplemented with leafy greens and a small pellet ration, keeping sugary foods to a minimum. Provide constant hay and chew toys for dental wear, and check the mane and rear for soiling and mats as part of routine care.
