The Lionhead emerged in Belgium and France from crosses involving Swiss Fox and dwarf rabbits, carrying a genuine 'mane gene' that wreaths the head in 5–7 cm of wool. Adults weigh 1.2–1.7 kg and live 7–10 years; the mane is fullest in youth and often thins slightly with age. The wool is the work: brush the mane and flanks two or three times a week (daily during molts) to prevent felting and — more dangerously — wool ingestion, since rabbits cannot vomit hairballs. Otherwise the Lionhead keeps rabbit standards: a roomy pen or free-roam space, litter box, chew-safe environment and ideally a bonded partner. Feed the standard rabbit trio — unlimited grass hay, daily greens, minimal pellets — and add extra hay during molting season to push swallowed wool through the gut. Health watch-list: wool-block (reduced droppings size is the early sign), dental malocclusion and ear mites under the wool; a quiet home suits this slightly sensitive breed best.
