The mata mata inhabits the slow, blackwater rivers, swamps, and flooded forests of the Amazon and Orinoco basins in northern South America. It is a large species reaching 40-45 cm and up to 15 kg or more, and it can live 30 to over 75 years, so it is a serious long-term specialty pet that demands substantial space. This is a poor-swimming, sedentary ambush predator, so provide a large tank with water only deep enough for its long neck to reach the surface without swimming. Use soft, tannin-stained warm water at 26-30°C with low light and minimal current to mimic its blackwater home; gentle filtration and stable water chemistry are essential. Mata matas are strict piscivores that hunt by suction, refusing most non-live or non-fish foods, so feed a varied diet of appropriately sized fish while avoiding a thiaminase-heavy fish-only menu.
