Eastern mud turtles range across the eastern and southeastern United States, favoring shallow, slow-moving or still waters with soft muddy bottoms, including brackish coastal marshes. They are among the smallest pet turtles at just 8-12 cm, and despite their size are impressively long-lived, often reaching 20-50 years with attentive husbandry. Like musk turtles, mud turtles are weak swimmers that prefer to walk, so keep water shallow enough for easy surfacing in a 100-150 liter setup with gentle filtration. They enjoy a soft substrate to dig into, dense planting for cover, and a basking spot around 29-31°C with UVB. Some individuals spend time on land, so a haul-out area is appreciated. Their diet is carnivore-leaning: offer worms, snails, insects, small fish, and pellets, feeding modest portions to keep these compact turtles trim.
