The eastern box turtle is a terrestrial North American turtle of woodlands and meadows across the eastern United States. Reaching only 10-18 cm, it is nonetheless extraordinarily long-lived, commonly surpassing 40-50 years and with well-documented individuals living past 100, so it is truly a lifetime, even inheritable, pet. Despite being called a turtle, it is kept like a tortoise on land, ideally in a large outdoor pen or a spacious indoor enclosure with deep, moisture-holding substrate for burrowing. Box turtles need high humidity, a shallow water dish for soaking, a basking area of 29-31°C, and UVB lighting to process calcium. They are omnivores with a strong appetite for animal matter: feed earthworms, snails, insects, and slugs alongside mushrooms, berries, and leafy greens for a varied, vitamin-rich diet.
