The common musk turtle is native to the eastern United States and southeastern Canada, where it lives in the muddy bottoms of ponds, slow rivers, and swamps. It is one of the smallest turtles kept in captivity, topping out at just 7-14 cm, yet remarkably long-lived, frequently reaching 30-50 years and making it an ideal choice for keepers wanting a compact aquatic pet. Because they are poor swimmers that walk along the bottom, house musk turtles in shallower water they can easily reach the surface of, with a modest 100-150 liter tank suiting an adult. Provide filtration, gentle basking at 29-31°C with UVB, and plenty of underwater structure and easy-exit basking access. They are largely carnivorous, relishing snails, worms, insects, small fish, and pellets, so keep feedings modest to prevent obesity in this sedentary species.
