Common musk turtles, or 'stinkpots', are small bottom-walking aquatic turtles suited to a filtered tank of about 75–115 L for one adult, with water only moderately deep since they are poor swimmers, plus easy-to-reach basking access and gentle décor to climb. Keep water at 24–26°C, offer a basking spot of 30–32°C with UVB, and run strong filtration because turtles are messy. Feed a carnivore-leaning omnivore diet: a quality aquatic-turtle pellet as a base, plus insects, worms, snails and occasional fish, with some aquatic plants for adults. Feed juveniles daily and adults every other day, keeping portions controlled to prevent obesity in this small, sedentary species. Musk turtles are hardy and long-lived but not fond of handling; they may bite and will musk defensively, so interact mainly at feeding and cleaning. Provide easy basking access despite their reluctant swimming. The main problems are shell rot and skin infections from poor water quality, respiratory infection if the water or air runs cold, and metabolic bone disease without adequate UVB and calcium.
