The Melanurus Wrasse hails from the western and central Pacific and grows to about 12-13 cm. Males and females differ in color, and juveniles transform dramatically as they mature. Like many wrasses it dives into the sand bed to sleep and when startled, so a soft sand substrate is essential. Provide a 190-litre (50-gallon) or larger reef tank with a 5 cm sand bed and secure lid, at 24-26C, salinity 1.024-1.026, pH 8.1-8.4. It is reef-safe and actively hunts pest snails, flatworms, and bristleworms. Feed mysis, marine pellets, and chopped seafood. Generally peaceful, it may harass smaller newcomers, so introduce it before more timid fish. A tight-fitting cover prevents jumping.
