The Miniature Mediterranean donkey originated on the islands of Sicily and Sardinia and stands under 91 cm at the withers, weighing just 90-160 kg. These long-lived animals often reach 25-35 years, so ownership is a decades-long commitment; they are kept almost exclusively as companions and pets rather than for work. Donkeys are herd animals and become deeply distressed if kept alone, so always keep at least two. They need a dry shelter, a dust or dirt loafing area, and secure fencing. Crucially, their diet must be tightly controlled: unlimited grass or rich feed causes obesity and laminitis, so grass hay or straw with limited grazing is best. Provide fresh water, a salt lick, regular farrier visits for hoof care, dental floating, and deworming. Affectionate and gentle, mini donkeys reward patient, consistent handling.
