The Miniature Pinscher — the 'King of Toys', with its distinctive high-stepping hackney gait — is a fearless, energetic, self-assured little dog that runs its household with tiny iron paws. Despite the resemblance it is not a small Doberman but its own ancient German ratting breed, and it packs a huge, bold personality into a small body: curious, alert and busy, it is a natural watchdog and a determined escape artist. It needs early socialisation, consistent, patient, positive training and enough exercise and mental stimulation to channel its energy, or its confidence tips into yappy, headstrong 'small dog syndrome'. Treat it like a real dog and it is a lively, devoted companion. The short, smooth coat is wonderfully easy, needing only a weekly brush, but with little insulation the Min Pin feels the cold and needs a coat in winter. Being tiny and athletic, it is prone to injury from falls and needs protecting from rough play. Health-wise, buy from a breeder who screens, and watch for patellar luxation, Legg-Calvé-Perthes hip disease, heart disease, epilepsy, and dental disease in its small mouth. Keep up dental care, secure your fences and doors, handle it gently, and this fearless little 'King of Toys' will be a spirited companion for twelve to sixteen years.
