The Pomeranian is a tiny, foxy ball of fluff descended from large spitz sled dogs, and it has never quite forgotten it: bold, alert, curious and confident, it rules its household with a bark far bigger than its body. Lively and clever, it enjoys short walks, play and learning tricks, but its watchdog instinct means barking needs early, gentle training to manage, along with socialisation so its confidence does not tip into 'small dog syndrome'. It bonds closely with its people and makes a lively apartment companion. The famous double coat needs brushing a few times a week to prevent matting and stays fluffiest with regular grooming. Being so small, the Pom is delicate and prone to specific issues: patellar luxation, a collapsing trachea (walk it on a harness, never a neck collar), dental disease from a crowded little mouth, and skin/coat problems including a condition sometimes called 'black skin disease'. Its small size also means care around rough play and jumps to avoid injury. Handle it gently, keep up dental care, protect the windpipe and joints, and a Pomeranian will be a spirited, devoted companion for twelve to sixteen years.
