The Norwegian Forest Cat is a big, sturdy, natural breed shaped by centuries of Scandinavian winters, with a personality to match: calm, gentle and independent, affectionate on its own terms rather than clingy. It bonds warmly with its family but is happy to entertain itself, and its strong climbing instinct means it wants height — sturdy tall trees and shelves are a must. Note that it matures slowly, reaching full size only at around five years. The glory of the breed is its dense, water-resistant double coat, which needs brushing a couple of times a week and daily during the heavy spring and autumn molts to prevent mats. Otherwise this is a robust, low-drama cat that suits families, other pets and busy homes. Healthy overall, the 'Wegie' does carry a few inherited risks that good breeders test for: hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, hip dysplasia, and glycogen storage disease type IV and pyruvate kinase deficiency (both DNA-testable). Buy from a breeder who screens, keep the cat at a healthy weight given its large frame, and maintain routine dental and kidney monitoring as it ages.
