The Maine Coon is a giant, good-natured 'dog of the cat world' that stays sociable and playful for life, follows its family from room to room and chats in a distinctive chirp and trill. Despite the imposing size it is famously gentle and patient, making it one of the best breeds for households with children or other pets. Big cats need big enrichment: provide extra-large scratching posts, sturdy cat trees rated for their weight, roomy litter trays and interactive games — many will play fetch and happily paddle in water. They mature slowly over three to four years, so expect a long, exuberant kittenhood. The shaggy, water-resistant coat needs brushing two to three times a week to prevent mats, more during seasonal moults. Buy from breeders who DNA-test for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), hip dysplasia and spinal muscular atrophy, watch the weight this large breed carries easily, and keep up dental and cardiac checks as they age.
