The oscar (Astronotus ocellatus) is a large, intelligent cichlid from the slow rivers and flooded forests of the Amazon and Orinoco basins in South America. It grows fast to 30–38 cm and lives 10–15 years, sometimes 20. Famous for personality, oscars learn their owners, beg for food and rearrange decor to their liking. Because of their size and mess, a single oscar needs at least 210–280 litres, with powerful filtration and a secure lid. Keep the water at 23–27°C with a pH of 6.0–7.5. They will uproot plants and shift substrate, so use robust hardscape and expect frequent large water changes to manage their heavy waste. Oscars are carnivores fed quality cichlid pellets as a staple, supplemented with occasional frozen or fresh meaty foods; avoid a feeder-fish-only diet, which risks disease and poor nutrition. Common problems are hole-in-the-head disease (linked to poor water and diet), ich and obesity. A big, clean, warm tank and a balanced diet keep these water-puppies healthy and engaging.
