The Red Empress (Protomelas taeniolatus) comes from the intermediate rock and sand habitat of Lake Malawi and reaches about 15 to 18 cm. Colour varies by collection point, and the vivid Super Red Empress on sale is usually a selected line of the Likoma or Tanzanian form. Males take a year or more to develop full colour, which is worth knowing before judging a young fish in a shop tank; females stay silver with a horizontal stripe. A male and three or four females need 350 litres or more at 24-27C, pH 7.8 to 8.6, hard water, sand, rock cover and open swimming space. Feed a spirulina-containing cichlid pellet with occasional frozen mysis, since this species grazes algae and small invertebrates rather than hunting fish, and it is more bloat-prone than a true piscivore hap. It is one of the mildest large Malawi cichlids, which makes it a good centrepiece for a peacock and hap community. It will still hybridise with related Protomelas, so keep one species of the genus per tank.
