The Flemish Giant is an old Belgian breed documented around Ghent since the 17th century, originally raised for meat and fur and today the archetypal 'gentle giant' companion. Adults weigh 6–10 kg (exceptional individuals more), stretch over 75 cm long, and live 5–8 years — giant breeds trade lifespan for size. Space is everything: a dog crate is not housing. Plan on a room, a puppy-pen of several square meters or true free-roam, with grippy flooring — giants sliding on tile develop sore hocks fast. They are calm, patient and famously good with respectful children and cats, but their kick is powerful: always support the hindquarters when lifting, or better, don't lift at all. A giant eats like one: a Flemish can clear its own body-volume of hay daily, plus generous greens and a measured large-breed pellet ration. Watch weight (obesity strains the heart and joints), check the hocks weekly, and keep them cool — over 28°C is dangerous for a rabbit this size, so summer means shade, tiles and frozen water bottles.
