Despite the name, the New Zealand rabbit was developed in the United States in the early 1900s, and is one of the most common large breeds, best known in pure white (an albino form) with ruby-pink eyes, though red, black and broken varieties exist. Adults weigh 4-5.5 kg and live 5-8 years. The breed was bred for a calm, cooperative temperament, and pet New Zealands are typically docile, friendly and unflappable, tolerating handling well and making steady companions for families who can meet their space needs. Being large and dense, they need solid, grippy flooring to protect their hocks and plenty of room to move. Feed unlimited grass hay as the bulk of the diet, a daily portion of leafy greens and a measured pellet ration scaled to their size, with fruit only as a treat, since these sturdy rabbits gain weight easily. Provide a large pen or free-roam area with a litter box, hides and chew-safe surroundings, ideally with a bonded, neutered partner. Watch weight, hock condition, the continuously growing teeth and any drop in appetite, which in rabbits is always urgent.
