The Rex rabbit originated in France in 1919, when a mutation shortened the guard hairs to the length of the undercoat, producing the dense, upright, velvet-like fur that gives the breed its name. The standard Rex is a solid mid-sized rabbit at 3.4-4.8 kg and lives 7-10 years with good care. The famous coat is low-maintenance and largely self-caring; over-brushing damages it, so a weekly stroke with damp hands is enough. The trade-off is thinner fur on the feet, which makes soft, solid flooring important to prevent sore hocks. Rexes are known for being calm, intelligent and gentle, and does make such attentive mothers that they are sometimes used to foster other litters. Feed the classic rabbit diet of unlimited grass hay, daily leafy greens and a small measured pellet ration, keeping fruit as an occasional treat. Give a large pen or free-roam space with a litter box, hides and chew protection, plus a neutered companion for enrichment. Provide solid flooring for the hocks, and watch the standard rabbit health issues — continuously growing teeth, GI stasis if eating stops, ear health and weight gain.
