Richardson's ground squirrel (Urocitellus richardsonii) is native to the northern Great Plains of the US and Canada. Weighing 200-750 grams depending on season, they live about four to six years and hibernate for much of the year in the wild, fattening dramatically beforehand. Sociable and curious, they tame well when raised young and enjoy interaction. Provide a large enclosure with deep bedding for digging, hides, tunnels, and enrichment to satisfy their burrowing drive. Their diet is largely grasses, seeds, greens, and a rodent or ground-squirrel pellet, with treats kept sparing to prevent obesity. Captive individuals may attempt seasonal hibernation, so monitor weight and temperature and consult an exotics vet on managing the cycle. As a native rodent and past plague-host species, they face legal restrictions in several US states, so confirm that keeping them is permitted where you live before acquiring one.
