Jerboas (Jaculus species) are hopping desert rodents from the arid belt of North Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia. Small at 50-90 grams, they live around three to six years and are built for explosive bipedal jumps, making them fast, flighty, and largely a species to admire rather than handle. They are rare in the pet trade and considered specialist animals. House them in a long, low enclosure with deep sand or a sand-and-soil substrate for burrowing, a hide, and a solid wheel to burn energy. Feed a desert-adapted mix of seeds, grains, dried vegetation, and insects; they obtain much of their water from food, so offer greens and moisture carefully to avoid digestive upset. Keep them warm and dry, as damp conditions cause illness. Availability and legality are limited, and many jurisdictions restrict wild-caught imports, so seek captive-bred stock and verify permits.
