The African pygmy hedgehog is a hybrid of two African species, bred specifically for the pet trade and much smaller than wild European hedgehogs. Adults weigh 250-600 grams and live four to six years. Nocturnal and naturally solitary, they range from shy to inquisitive, and are best suited to patient owners who enjoy a low-key, hands-on-when-awake companion rather than a cuddly lap pet. House hedgehogs singly in a spacious solid-bottom enclosure kept warm at 24-27 degrees Celsius, as chilling can trigger dangerous attempted hibernation; a thermostatic heat source is often essential. Provide a large solid-surface wheel for their considerable nightly running, hides, and fleece or paper bedding. Feed a diet high in protein and low in fat: quality insectivore or hedgehog food, or a suitable cat kibble, supplemented with insects like mealworms and crickets. They are highly prone to obesity and cancer, so monitor weight closely and use an exotics vet for regular health checks.
