African pygmy dormice (Graphiurus species) come from the woodlands and savannas of sub-Saharan Africa and are among the smallest pet rodents at just 18-30 grams. They live roughly four to six years and are strongly colonial, so they must be kept in stable same-sex groups or breeding pairs; isolation causes stress and decline. They are quick, nocturnal, and better watched than handled. House them in a tall, escape-proof glass or fine-mesh enclosure with dense branches, cork bark, foliage, and multiple nest sites to climb and hide. Feed a varied diet of small insects such as crickets and mealworms, seeds, fruit, and nectar or pollen supplements; live prey is essential enrichment. Maintain warm temperatures around 24-28C and good ventilation to prevent respiratory problems. Breeding can be prolific, so plan group management carefully. They are widely available and generally legal, but confirm local exotic-rodent rules.
