The Somali is a long-haired Abyssinian, sharing that breed's endless curiosity, athleticism and mischievous cleverness while adding a magnificent ticked coat and a fox-like brush tail. This is a busy, hands-on cat that opens cabinets, unties shoelaces and treats the whole home as vertical territory to explore, so it thrives with an active household, plenty to climb, and a lively companion — it is playful and people-oriented rather than a still lap cat. Unlike many longhairs the Somali has a fairly non-matting coat, so a brush twice a week (more during the seasonal molt, when it can shed dramatically) keeps it in good order. Keep it enriched with puzzle toys, cat trees and interactive games to prevent boredom-driven mischief. Health mirrors the Abyssinian: buy from a breeder who DNA-tests for progressive retinal atrophy and pyruvate kinase deficiency, and be aware of renal amyloidosis, patellar luxation and a tendency toward gingivitis. Maintain a good dental routine, monitor kidney health with age, and give this clever cat the activity it needs.
