The steel-blue killifish, Fundulopanchax gardneri, is one of the best beginner killifish because it is far more forgiving than many of its relatives, tolerating a range of conditions and readily accepting prepared foods. Males are spectacularly colored, and the species stays around two to two and a half inches, thriving in soft to moderately hard water around 72-79F in a well-covered, planted tank. Like most killies they are keen jumpers, so a tight lid is essential. Males can be feisty with one another, so keep either a single male with several females or a larger group in a spacious, densely planted tank to diffuse aggression. They relish live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and blackworms, which condition them for prolific spawning among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. Eggs can be incubated in water or on damp peat, making this a great gateway species for breeders.
