The Giant African Millipede (Archispirostreptus gigas) is one of the largest millipedes in the world, a cylindrical, glossy-black detritivore from East Africa that can exceed 30 cm and carries a few hundred legs that move in mesmerising waves. Gentle, slow and harmless, it lives 5-10 years and is a favourite low-maintenance invertebrate. Millipedes do not bite, but when stressed they can curl into a spiral and secrete a mild defensive fluid that can stain and irritate, so handle them calmly over a soft surface and wash hands afterward. They are peaceful and can be kept in groups, and are content to spend their days burrowing and grazing through decaying plant matter. House them in a terrarium with a deep layer — at least 10-15 cm — of moist substrate rich in rotting leaf litter and decaying wood, which is both their home and their food, kept warm around 24-27 C and humid. Supplement with fresh vegetables and fruit and a calcium source such as cuttlebone to support healthy moulting and the exoskeleton. The key is deep, moist, organic substrate and stable humidity; too dry and they struggle to moult, which is when a millipede is soft and most vulnerable.
