The Llama (Lama glama) is the largest of the domesticated South American camelids, standing up to 1.8 m at the head and weighing 130-200 kg. Domesticated in the Andes thousands of years ago as a pack and fibre animal, it is taller, longer-eared and more independent than the alpaca, lives 15-25 years, and is valued today as a calm companion, trekking animal and a natural guardian that will chase off foxes and dogs from a flock. Llamas are herd animals and should never be kept alone; they need at least one other camelid, or a flock they are guarding, for company. Intelligent and generally gentle, they can be halter-trained and are easy to handle when well socialised, though spitting is their honest way of settling disputes — usually aimed at each other rather than people. They thrive on pasture and grass hay, needing surprisingly little supplementary feed, with minerals and only limited grain to avoid obesity; overfeeding is a more common problem than underfeeding. Routine care includes annual shearing, regular toenail and occasional tooth trimming, parasite control and vaccinations from a camelid-experienced vet, plus shelter and secure fencing. Given space, a companion and basic husbandry, a llama is a hardy, long-lived and rewarding large pet.
